What is an Instagram Take-Over?
Instagram "take-overs" describe a marketing technique in which you hand over your Instagram account to someone else temporarily, allowing them to share content with your audience. This strategy not only freshens up your feed, but it also allows account owners to cross-promote and collaborate around shared interests. Within international Education, Instagram take-overs can be employed to highlight a student's experience on campus or while abroad, for example. Before handing over your account's login credentials, it is important to set up guidelines for participants — the following list can be utilized as a starting point for developing your own Instagram take-over initiative.

Application process
I ask for:
  • One sentence of what you would post that week (maybe you have a theme idea; a week in the life of, a retrospective, foodie photos etc)
  • A link to your Instagram bio
I then take a look at the quality of their photography, the curation of their feed, current Instagram stories, and their copywriting skills. The amount of followers they have may play a  role in selection, but it takes a back-seat to the content and if it aligns with your profile.

Instagram Take-Over Guidelines
1.  Post every day (first photo will be introducing yourself). You can sign off each post with your Instagram handle.
2.  Post on your personal account to let them know you’re taking over ours!
3.  Take into account the feed…
  • What image will look good next to the previous one and above the one the will move down?
  • Is there a balance of positive and negative space (images with more negative space look better in the feed)
  • Is there a balance of images:
    • With people in them
    • Of the city
    • Of daily life
    • Of travel
  • Have you written clever captions? Do they inform, inspire, entertain the followers?
  • Have you made an Instagram story? Try to use a range of Boomerang, video and still photos in Instagram stories.
4.  Hashtag as the first comment: #instatravel #instapassport #mytraveldiary #mytravelgram #travel #europe #architecture (plus relevant geographical and personal tags)
5.  Write back to your fans in the comments
6.  Log out of the account after your week of fame
